What is UIL?
Academic UIL is an extra-curricular activity where students compete in academic competitions against district schools and other schools across South Texas. There are 8 subjects including math, science, maps, graphs & charts, history, calculators, dictionary skills, spelling & number sense. Each week students go to practices to learn new skills and tricks for competition.
How do I Join?
To join, you simply need to attend any of the practices.
*If you develop a conflict during that week's practice, please visit with that sponsor to pick up the practice materials that you missed.
What does U.IL. stand for?
UIL stands for “University Interscholastic League” which is the governing body for athletic, academic, drama, and music competitions in Texas. NEISD sponsors academic teams at each of the middle and high schools. The Bush UIL academic team is one of the best in the district.
No pass, no play! Students must be passing all of their classes in order to attend competitions. Prior to the competition, Ms. Dias will notify students who become ineligible due to a failing grade on a progress report or report card. The district does make a one-time exemption to this rule for Pre-AP and GT classes. Ms. Dias will notify you if this applies to your student at any time throughout the year.

What do I wear?
Students should wear jeans and the Bush UIL t-shirt. UIL shirts are available for $15 and can be ordered through our online registration. Checks made out to Bush or cash should be given to Ms. Dias prior to the deadline. Parents are also encouraged to purchase a shirt to show their team pride!
Are there fees?
While there are entry fees to our meets, our organization does various fundraising events throughout the year to pay for them. It is our goal for UIL to keep all competitions FREE TO OUR STUDENTS. Therefore, it is imperative that our parents volunteer to help during these events. Visit the "Parents" page for more information.
However, if a student misses a competition which he or she registered for, then they must find a substitute for each of the registered tests or pay the $3.50 per test fee back to the school. Students will not be allowed to register for the next meet until that obligation has been met.
